Background of the Study
Schizophrenia is a severe and chronic mental disorder characterized by distortions in thought, perception, and behavior. Patients with schizophrenia often experience social withdrawal, delusions, hallucinations, and cognitive impairments that can significantly impact their ability to function in daily life (Muench et al., 2023). Recovery from schizophrenia is a long-term process that requires not only medical treatment but also substantial psychosocial support (Borg et al., 2023). Family support has been identified as a crucial factor in the recovery and management of schizophrenia, as families provide emotional, practical, and social assistance to individuals with the disorder (Zauszniewski et al., 2023).
In Nigeria, the family plays a central role in caregiving due to the scarcity of mental health professionals and institutions (Adebayo et al., 2023). The emotional and social support provided by family members can help patients with schizophrenia manage the stresses associated with their condition and adhere to treatment plans (Agboola & Okediji, 2024). While research on family involvement in schizophrenia recovery has been extensive in Western contexts, limited studies exist in Nigeria. This study seeks to assess the role of family support in the recovery of patients with schizophrenia at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, Ogun State, to understand its significance and identify barriers to effective family involvement.
Statement of the Problem
Schizophrenia is associated with significant impairments in quality of life, and the recovery process is often prolonged and complicated (Jönsson et al., 2023). While medical treatments such as antipsychotic medications are critical, the role of family support in ensuring adherence to treatment and providing emotional and psychological care is equally important (Gonzalez-Blanco et al., 2023). However, in Nigeria, many families lack adequate knowledge and resources to support their loved ones effectively, and in some cases, stigma surrounding mental illness further isolates patients and their families (Adebayo & Olawale, 2023). This study will assess how family support impacts the recovery process of schizophrenia patients and explore the challenges families face in providing care within the Nigerian context.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on patients with schizophrenia at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Abeokuta, and their families. It does not include patients with other psychiatric disorders. Limitations include the self-reported nature of the data, possible biases in family perceptions, and the study's cross-sectional design.
